This week in science we learned about elements and ions through taking notes and completing an assignment. We learned about the components of how each element looks on the periodic table, the components are the element name, the element symbol, the atomic number, and the average atomic mass. We also learned what ions are and what types of ions there are. Ions are atoms that have lost or gained electrons. There are two types of ions, a cation and an anion. Cations are ions that have lost electrons which also means they have a positive charge. If you were to show that something is a cation you would have in superscript after you write the element an addition symbol with a number next to it representing how manh electrons were lost. This shows that they have lost electrons which means they have a positive charge. Anions are ions that have gained electrons which means they have a negative charge. You would write this in your superscript which is after you write the element you would have a subtraction symbol and a number next to it to show how many electrons were lost. This represents that because they gained electrons that their charge goes down which means that the element has a negative charge.

S&EP 6-Constructing Explanations & Designing Solutions:

This week I constructed explanations because I every question I answered had to have an explanation. One of the questions was "how do you know if this is a cation and how do you know how much electrons was lost?" I had to design an explanation and give good detail on how I found the answer. I had to use the ACE strategy, I had to answer the question, then cite how I knew the answer, and extend my answer. Throughout every question I used the ACE strategy and answered the questions with as much detail as possible.

XCC-System and System Models:

The system I noticed was the system connection between the periodic table, elements, ions, cations, and anions. The system is that all the elements have a place on the periodic table and that all ions are elements but not all elements are ions. All cations are ions but not all ions are cations, and all anions are ions but not all ions are anions. That is how the system works and it works perfectly. It allows things to be categorized much easier kind of like how the periodic table defines each element by how many protons it has. This is a great system that allows all elements to have a place.
