Science and Engineering Practices Quiz Re-Grade 8/25/17


      The first question I got wrong was:

     1. Students at their tables read three articles about different communities that have instituted plans to conserve energy. They evaluate the information to create a plan for how their own community can conserve energy and share their plan during Student Exhibition Night.

       I originally answered obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information. I realized now looking back at the question that it says that they "evaluate the information to create a plan." Because it says create a plan I realized now that the correct answer was planning and carrying out information. In the question it literally says the answer and I should've of realized that.

     The second question I got wrong was:

      2. After wondering about how the size of a magnet affects the number of paperclips it can pick up, a group of students develops a procedure that answers their question. They gather data and report back to the class.

      I originally answered analyzing and interpreting data. I realized now that in the question it says that they "developed a procedure that answers their question" and then they reported it. That basically means they did the scientific method which is part of carrying out an investigation.

       The third and last question I got wrong was:

      3. Students in Mrs. Garcia's class use a class chart of what different animals eat and group the animals in different ways based on their food sources. Students then discuss which animals would be affected if changes occurred to different food sources.

       I first thought the answer was obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information. The correct answer was analyzing and interpreting data. This was a better answer then what I thought because in the question it says that they used a chart and a chart is something that you analyze. It says thought that the students discussed it but that was after they talked about the chart. They discussed it though by the data they got from the chart so that is why the correct answer is better than mine.

Summary:        This week in science we learned about biogeochemical cycles, more specifically, I learned about the biogeochemical cycle known as the Sulfur Cycle. What I now know about the Sulfur Cycle because of what I learned this week through research is each part in the sulfur cycle. I also now know that their are a lot of different parts in the sulfur, but my focus was trying to make this complicated cycle very simple and easy to understand. Plate Tectonics 3/10/18

Summary:        This week in science we learned about Plate Tectonics. Plates have been on Earth for thousands of years and are consistently moving (very slowly). Through this the Earth can recycle our land, by destroying the old land, and creating new land. These plates are made of rock and are in the lithosphere layer of the Earth. Another thing I know is that there are 3 different type of plate boundaries. Those three types of plate boundaries are convergent boundaries, divergent boundaries, and transform boundaries. Convergent boundaries are when two plates collide and their are two different types of convergent boundaries. The two types of convergent boundaries are collisional boundaries and subduction zones.
