Greenhouse Effect 4/9/17

    Summary- Link      This week in science I learned about the greenhouse effect. One thing I learned was that one of the most common greenhouse gases is CO2. Another thing I learned was that the higher the CO2 levels are the more heat that will be trapped around the earth. One other thing I learned was that Greenhouse Effect can help farmers by helping keep the crops warm and allowing the farmers to have a longer harvest season. Coriolis Effect Image        This week in science we went more in depth with weather for example we learned about temperature, floods, tornadoes, air pressure, and the coriolis effect. What I learned was that there is three scales for temperature before this I only knew of celsius and fahrenheit but I now learned of Kelvin. Another thing I learned was what gives wind its mass which is air molecules. I also learned that regular tornados only last for a couple minutes. One other thing I learned was that hurricanes form in the summer and hurricanes are placed on the Saffir-Simpson scale that rates them from 1-5 based on their wind speed. Another thing I learned was last year California was at a exceptional drought now only some places in California are in a moderate drought.       Summary: Link      This week in science I learned about wind, storms, and weather by watching a video and taking notes on it. What I learned about wind is that wind is caused by the rotation of the earth. Also that without wind there would be no weather so no wind, no weather. One other thing I learned about wind is that cold air sinks and contracts while hot air rises and expands. What I learned about weather is that when there is low-pressure weather it is cold and stormy and when there is high-pressure weather it is sunny and warm. Summary: Link      This week in science we completed our penguin project, what we had to do is make a house for an ice cube (that represents the penguin) then we had to build a house or structure for it to stay cold in the sun for a while. What I learned from this project was styrofoam is very good at keeping things cold.  Another thing I learned is aluminum foil is good at both keeping things hot and cold. The other thing I learned was that when you are doing an experiment you should use things in it that you have researched so you know that it should work. The last thing I learned is that you should use a bigger house when doing this project, based off of the different houses the bigger ones did better. Link This week I learned a lot about heat, I learned how it moves and some examples of it by taking notes reading articles and doing a couple of assignments on it. I learned there are three forms of how heat moves conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is the direct transfer of heat when one thing (substance ) and another are touching each other. For example, when you are on the beach and it's a hot day the sand is making your feet hot because of conduction. Convection is the transfer of heat by the movement of a fluid and hot air rises and cool air sinks like shown in the picture. Radiation is the direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. For example, when you go outside and it is hot the sun heat's your face because of radiation. States of Matter 2.0 2/12/17

Summary- This week in science we learned more about solid, liquid, and gas/states of matter. What we learned about mostly was shape, volume, and the particles in each state of matter. What I learned about gas was that it has a changing shape, this is because it moves based on it's container. Also it's particles move very very freely and the particles aren't linked like how they are for the other states. What I learned about a solid is that the particles vibrate but stay in one place and are linked. Also a solid has a definite shape and volume.  What I learned about a liquid was the particles are linked but move more freely than the particles in a solid. My Superhero Project Blog 2/2/17

Summary Silver Banshee (my superhero's villain wife) Link      This week we finished our My Superhero project where we had to make a superhero, choose a villain mate, create their kid based off their parent's genes, and do other things based off those three. What I learned was how to use punnet squares, which is write the parent's genotypes on top and on a side then fill in the blanks based off those. I also learned about what mutations are and how they occur, which is when the cell copies the DNA it has a typo of usually just one base (letter) and never catches it. Another thing I learned was that if their is 1 dominant gene in all four possibilities in the punnet squares that means their is a 100% chance that the child will have that dominant trait. If there is only recessive alleles in all of the possibilities of the punnet square that means that the child will automatically get the recessive allele.
