Digital is Better than Analog
Using digital means having high quality sound that can be manipulated. “Digital has certain perfect things about it [, it] immediately solved all the problems of analog background noise, hiss, where pitch control all of those things.” according to the video titled, “Analog or Digital? (1993),” from PastVid. Digital allows you to have “good control over the sound,” so that it “...provides sound that is crisp and clear,” according to the same video mentioned above. This fact will allow music to be heard with less complication as the sound will be easily heard. This is due to how digital creates sound that can be altered so that it can be perfect and clear. Moreover, the music that digital produces will last forever.
Digital is sound that can never be lost so that no matter what, music can be heard at the same quality, for generations to come. With digital, there is no ”...fragile vinyl to contend with and would last forever.” as said in the video titled, “Analog or Digital? (1993)” from PastVid. Just by making a silly mistake and damaging an LP record, your music will be lost. With digital, that will not occur. On top of this, “digital information is generally more secure: cell phone conversations are encrypted before transmission—something easy to do when information is in numeric form to begin with.” according to the article titled, “Analog and Digital” by Chris Woodford. It will ensure that your sound will only be changed by you, and not changed by anyone else. Not only this, but, “one of the biggest cons with analog is that every time a copy of the audio is made from the original tape, the quality in sound deteriorates a little. This also applies each time the track is played.” according to the article titled, “Analog Vs Digital:Advantages Vs Disadvantages,” by CHAIRMAN2010. Analog actually gets worse over time compared to digital that stays constant eternally. The longevity of digital versus analog is also discussed in the article titled, “ANALOG, DIGITAL, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?” by Recording Connection where it said that, “...whereas analog technology can wear out or be damaged, digital media can last for an indefinite length of time.” In spite of this, there are still some people that believe otherwise.
Some people believe that analog is actually better than digital. The reasons for this position is that “analog just sounds better than digital. Listening to a well-recorded LP, you hear humans making music...” according to the article titled, “Why does analog sound better than digital?” by Steve Guttenberg. They believe this because, “In an analog recording, the electrical wave that represents the sound varies in a way that is the same or analogous to the actual compression expansion cycles of sound itself.” according to the video titled, “Analog vs Digital” by MrAudioSoundImages. Meaning that analog’s sound waves are continuous compared to digital’s sound waves which are discrete. This is not compelling enough due to how when listening to a “...digital recording... our ears and brains technically can’t determine the spaces between the digital values, just like our brains interpret film as continuous motion.” according to the article titled, “ANALOG, DIGITAL, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?” by Recording Connection. In addition, despite not be flowed like analog, as mentioned above, digital creates clear sound. As a result, the combination of the two will create better or at least equivalent sound quality to analog’s.
Above all, digital technology is cheaper, allowing it to be worldwide. Digital technology is cheaper both in terms of using it to create and for those wanting to listen to it. Also, there are much more ways to listen to digital music than analog music. Which, in result, will allow more people to listen to it as they will not have to pay as much money to listen to it. In addition, according to the article titled, “Analog Vs Digital:Advantages Vs Disadvantages,” by CHAIRMAN2010, “digital is far easier to edit, you can chop, edit and manipulate audio within a matter of minutes. There is also an undo button with digital meaning if you accidentally delete something or mis edit something that doesn’t work, you can undo without having to start again.” With this, also comes the fact that, “over time as technology has advanced it has meant recording, editing and mixing could not be simpler and can now be done for a fraction of the cost of an analog recording.” also according to the same advantages and disadvantages article mentioned above. Not only does digital cost less to purchase, but “it's easier to store information in digital form and it generally takes up less room. You'll need several shelves to store 400 vinyl, analog LP records, but with an MP3 player you can put the same amount of music in your pocket!” according to the article titled, “Analog and Digital” by Chris Woodford. Thus, with digital, more music can be owned by people as it is cheaper to own and can be listened to anywhere, by really any person. Furthermore, digital is a very versatile technology that creates a great quality of music.
Digital is better than analog. Compared to analog, digital is all-around better and has many more advantages. Digital music has no unneeded sounds and can be maneuvered to fit one’s desire. Lastly, digital music will always be around and due to its cost compared to analog, can be used by a larger group of people. Analog is history, digital is what can be used anytime, by anyone, and we must use that to the greatest ability.
